futurecast showing us that we are dry right now. we're going to keep it dry over the next couple of hours, and then we have the chance for a few showers as early as late morning. better chance, though, for those showers by later on this afternoon into the evening hours. you can see the timestamp right at 7:00. and the threat for showers stays with us throughout the night into tuesday and especially on wednesday. so, for today, by 8:00, 31. 10:00, 35. and by noon, we are looking at 37 degrees. a cold start to the day. relatively quiet before we bring in that wet weather tuesday and also wednesday. but now let's get a check on the roadways with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. >> good morning to you. we're following an accident out of north coventry township, route 74 blocked off near catfish lane. you can stick to 422 as an alternate there. a live look at the blue route near the mid-county toll plaza. both directions very quiet. drive times average right now, about 18 minutes both directions between 95 and 76. speaking of 95, drive times here looking pretty good, about 12 to

13 minutes both ways between woodhaven road and the vine street expressway. the vine is also clear. rosemary? >> thank you, jillian. now to the tragedy in brooklyn and the nypd officers killed during an ambush. people came together last night at a candlelight vigil to honor the two men. mourners left flowers at this makeshift memorial for officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu. this morning, we're learning more about the attack and the suspect. detectives say ismaaiyl brinsley told people on the street to "watch what i'm going to do" just before the shootings. also on brinsley's instagram page, he wrote "they take one of ours, let's take two of theirs." investigators believe that brinsley was motivated by anger toward the police following the recent grand jury decisions in ferguson and new york. >> this didn't solve anything. the only thing that this did was take fathers away from their children, take kids away from their parents. >> president obama has offered full support and federal assistance to the nypd in the

wake of the killings. in response to what's happened in new york, we've been talking to philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey about the issues facing police and the environment that they're working in. nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside of police headquarters in center city this morning. and katy, what is the commissioner saying about yesterday's violence in new york? >> reporter: well, rosemary, police commissioner charles ramsey told us that he was concerned about the police protests we've seen around the country over the last few weeks, that they would trigger some kind of negative ripple effect, and now we have two fallen officers in new york. >> it wasn't like a high-risk operation or something, when you know that you're really putting your life at risk. i mean, just sitting in the car, maybe just looking out of the window. and then all of a sudden, someone comes up and just murders you. >> reporter: that's reaction from philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey about the deadly police shootings in brooklyn this weekend. he is currently a leader of president obama's task force on community policing. the goal of that task force over

the next few months is to figure out how to improve the relationship between police around the country and those who feel disenfranchised. >> we do need to deal with a lot of very serious issues. that's why this task force that the president's put together is so important. and it won't change what we do, but it does add a sense of urgency now that we do definitely need to focus, get something to him as quickly as possible. >> reporter: and coming up at 5:30, i'll tell you what commissioner ramsey is asking specifically of his officers and here in philadelphia in the wake of the deadly police shootings. reporting live outside police headquarters, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. meantime, officers in new jersey are taking extra caution after the statewide police union issued an alert following the deadly violence in brooklyn. we spoke with the president of camden metro's fraternal order of police about what the union is advising its officers to do. >> right now i would really have them concentrate on their surroundings and make sure that

they're aware of what's going on and where they're at when they're writing their reports or taking a break. >> officers in camden held this community outreach yesterday for several dozen families. they hope that events like this will improve the public's relationship with police. and you can read more about the fallout from the attack on nbc10.com. you can also download our new app for the iphone to get breaking news alerts while you're on the go. and this weekend, about 1,000 demonstrators united in center city for one of the largest rallies and marches yet through philadelphia. the group blackout philly began at 15th and arch with their hands up and then made their way around city hall. their message, fight hate with love. men, women and children called for a change in race relations and policing across the country. >> i think it's a good thing, because we should be talking about race relations. i think that it's a huge problem in the united states right now. >> you know what's beautiful, this is when you know america's changing, when young, white people are standing up across

the world saying black lives matter. >> protesters marched for hours, making it to the steps of the art museum, shutting down some city streets. the protest was peaceful and police say there were no arrests. today, souderton area high school will hold a vigil for two of the victims of last week's killing spree in montgomery county. ninth grader nina flick was killed. her 17-year-old brother, anthony flick, a junior at the high school, was seriously injured. he is the only survivor of the attack. police say the violence happened in three locations in montgomery county, harleysville, lansdale and souderton. members of four generations of one family were killed. the murders sparked an intense manhunt for former military veteran bradley stone. police say stone killed his ex-wife, her mother, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law and niece. stone's body was found two days later about a half a mile from his house in hanover township. he had cuts on his body, but authorities have not released the cause of death. in the wake of the violence

in montgomery county, the community is getting some much-needed help. crisis counselors are holding a meeting tonight to help those affected by the murders. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the meeting site in lansdale. jesse, tell us more. >> reporter: tracy, there is going to be a community meeting here inside the parks and recreation building. the services offered here are going to be offered to residents of communities outside of this borough that also suffered through the killing spree. the six murders allegedly committed by bradley stone a week ago prompted lansdale police to request help from the county's victims community service program. at tonight's presentation, people will hear about crisis and supportive counseling services that are offered. police say ex-marine bradley stone killed six members of his wife's family, including joanne koder and patricia hill. the crime has created a cascading wave of emotions. >> they're scared. they're scared to go back into their homes.

and you know, they're concerned about that. even though they weren't witness to the actual tragic event, they saw everything that was going on. >> reporter: this type of help has been around for decades, but this is the first time that police have actually called and asked them to come in and set up a meeting. coming up in the next hour, why there is a rush to try and get this service out to people in this area. live in lansdale, montgomery county, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. new from overnight, the search is on for two masked men who robbed a 7-eleven in montgomery county. police on the scene at 54th and city avenue in lower merion township told us that the men were armed with guns when they walked into the store around 12:30 this morning. one worker was hurt. police are not sure exactly how much cash the robbers grabbed before they ran off. also new from overnight, crews are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a halfway house in camden. flames broke out at the building along magnolia avenue around 11:30 last night. everybody made it out safely.

there are no reports of any injuries. there is a new clue to report in the disappearance of shane montgomery. divers searching the schuylkill river yesterday found a set of keys belonging to the missing west chester university student. the 21-year-old disappeared early thanksgiving morning after leaving a bar on main street in manayunk. last night, st. john the baptist church in manayunk held its tree lighting in honor of shane. parishioners and friends and family decorated the tree with green ribbons as a symbol of hope for answers in shane's disappearance. >> we are all part of shane's family now, not a blood line, but we're all part of this. it's captured us all. and there's a momentum and a solidarity, i think, that speaks to the human condition. >> fbi officials said earlier this month that shane had been walking between the manayunk canal and the schuylkill river soon after he left the bar. now your nbc 10 first alert weather.

>> all right, a good monday morning. we are starting off pretty chilly across the area. we're looking at temperatures well below freezing in many spots. we are dry for now, and that may change as we head throughout the rest of the day, especially in the afternoon. so, weather headlines on your monday morning. some showers today. grab the umbrella as you head out. just keep it in the car, keep it in your bag. you may need it, especially this afternoon. then by tuesday, we're going to see a little warmer to milder into the low 50s along with more showers. wednesday right near 60 degrees, wet, not white, though. we are looking at some heavy rain on wednesday. outside we are looking at some clouds. a live look outside, and we are looking at clouds as we head throughout the day. mostly cloudy right now in philadelphia, 29 degrees. winds out of the north-northwest at 6 miles per hour. we're going to see them switching around out of the east later on this afternoon. that will help to bring in the moisture as well. right now, temperatures below freezing and a lot of clouds. 25 in pottstown. 35 right now in bensalem. 32 in mt. holly, 23 in glassboro. so, where you have more cloud cover is where you're seeing warmer temperatures. 26 right now in atlantic city.

and we're looking at 27 in dover. off to a cold start. we're going to be cold later on this afternoon before we start that warming trend over the next several days. we are dry right now. on radar you can see clouds in place, a few breaks back to the north and west where we're seeing the 20s. but as we widen out here, we see this rain down to the south. and this will affect us later on today. so, your christmas eve forecast, that's the day where we're expecting some heavy rain, also some wind. 60 degrees. a mild day. that's going to be the trade-off there. then for your christmas day forecast, we're going to bring back more sunshine. we'll call it partly sunny, colder and windy, right near 51 degrees. today's forecast, temperatures mainly in the 30s. 33 in mt. pocono. may see the rain start out as sleet, maybe a little snow, but it won't last very long. it's not going to stick either. 37 in doylestown, 38 mt. holly. to the south and east, mainly 40s. 40 in vineland, 45 in atlantic city. and a quick look back up to the city, temperatures mainly in the upper 30s to low 40s today. 40 degrees in philadelphia. a look at your seven-day straight ahead. ten minutes after 5:00 right now.

let's get you updated on the roads as you get ready to head out. >> nbc 10 traffic reporter jillian mele is watching what's happening out there. >> good morning, guys. around center city, things are pretty quiet, but we have a problem that's been out there about an hour. coventry, catfish lane, route 724. take 422 as an alternate. 76, quiet near montgomery drive, the eastbound side as drivers make their way into center city. you can see 76 is clear both directions the entire length. rosemary? recognized for risking his life. a local man receives a national honor for his role in taking down an alleged gunman. and a five-year low as we gear up for the busy holiday travel season. speaking of driving out there on the roads, take a look at gas prices across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. we'll show you.

it is 5:14. the man you see here risked his life to save others during a deadly shooting in montgomery county. bernard kozen will be honored by the carnegie community funds commission. he helped tackle and disarm a gunman who stormed into a municipal meeting in 2013. police say the suspected gunman, rockney newell, shot and killed three people at that meeting and is currently awaiting trial and could face the death penalty. a court hearing is scheduled today for the suspect in a decades-old child murder case in new york city.

pedro hernandez is charged with killing 6-year-old etan patz in 1979, but it wasn't until 2012 when police arrested hernandez. family members and friends alerted investigators that they believed hernandez was responsible. the judge is now weighing whether or not to allow testimony from witnesses hypnotized in the 35-year-old case. a ruling could come as early as this week. hernandez has pleaded not guilty. etan patz vanished in 1979 while walking to his bus stop in new york city. his body was never found. he was one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton. a chester county man will spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting and killing his longtime girlfriend. gregory twyman pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of jamica woods. prosecutors say the murder was premeditated. before the murder, twyman changed his twitter photo to a shotgun and profile picture to a shotgun shell, the same kind used to kill woods.

comments on the page also helped prosecutors show he planned the crime. in montgomery county, a teenager will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the stabbing death of his girlfriend last year. a judge has sentenced 18-year-old tristan stahley to life in prison without the possibility of parole. a jury convicted him of first-degree murder for killing 17-year-old julie siller. authorities say he stabbed her more than 70 times on a hiking trail in skippack. look at these two suspects. police in chester county say they are responsible for a violent home invasion and they're still on the loose. west whiteland police say leonard bernard knocked on a 76-year-old woman's door last night, pretending to be with a home health care company. he then allegedly forced his way inside, tied up the woman and stole her jewelry. bernard and his alleged accomplice, breanna mitchell, on the right, are now both facing a number of charges. it is 5:16. u.s. senator chris coons of delaware is in west africa today taking a firsthand look at u.s. efforts to stop the spread of

ebola. and this morning he will hold a news briefing from liberia. senator coons is the first member of congress to visit liberia since the ebola outbreak began. he will arrive back in delaware tomorrow afternoon. one doctor in charge of an ebola treatment center in sierra leone said poor training is a challenge. he's the only doctor in charge of a staff of 260. right now, 27 patients are being treated there. the doctor said he wears protective gear but has never had any formal training on proper use of the gear. he also said his staff hasn't been paid in weeks. nbc's tom brokaw is reporting good news about himself. he says his cancer is in remission. in a note to colleagues, he called it very encouraging news. brokaw announced he will soon begin a drug maintenance program after months of chemotherapy. last february, the 74-year-old revealed that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the blood marrow. drivers are getting an extra special holiday gift this year.

gas prices are the lowest they have been in five years. the national average price for regular unleaded has fallen to $2.45 a gallon, 15 cents less than a week ago. analysts say unless there is a major disruption in crude oil, prices should stay low through the start of the new year. here is where the prices stand right now in our area. in the five-county philadelphia area, the average is $2.69 for a gallon of regular gas. people in delaware are shelling out about $2.55 a gallon. and the lowest prices are in south jersey, where a gallon costs $2.37. the positive news on the gas prices, we can't promise that for the traffic this morning. >> but we can promise you we'll let you know what's going on. jillian mele's watching the roads. good morning. the majors are for the most part looking pretty good, but we still have this accident that we're following out of north coventry township, route 724 is closed right near catfish lane. it's a serious accident. we're told a vehicle went into a tree in that area. you can take route 422 to get around it. 422 is clear right now.

76 is looking great. you can see lines of green in both directions. no accidents and no delays. drive times pretty average, about 12 minutes both ways, 11 minutes really between the blue route and the vine. the blue route is clear and so is the vine street expressway. heading out to 95, a live look right near cottman avenue. you can see cones set up, part of that long-term project, but nothing that's slowing anyone down on 95. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> all right. we're seeing temperatures in the 20s in a lot of spots across the area. feels like the teens in mt. pocono. off to a cold start. it will be cold as we head throughout the afternoon before we start a big-time warm-up by wednesday. outside we are seeing some clouds this morning. depending on where you are, we're seeing more clouds in spots than others. everyone, though-see more clouds than sunshine throughout the day. 29 right now in philadelphia, winds out of the north-northwest at 6 miles per hour. and right now we're seeing clouds in reading, also in philadelphia, even seeing some fog and mist in reading. temperatures mainly in the 20s.

26 in atlantic city. and here is all that blue on the map indicating all that cold air this morning. 30 in allentown, 22 in west chester. right at the freezing mark in mt. holly and temperatures in the 20s mainly to the south and east of philadelphia. as well, 24 in millville and 26 in atlantic city. so, a cold start to the day. we're going to be cold today before we start that warm-up. there is that cold air in place today, monday. and then we're going to call it cool tomorrow. temperatures into the low 50s. that will feel good. and then by wednesday, that mild air comes in. you notice that green across us, and we will be right near 60, maybe 61 degrees on wednesday. then it's right back to the cold air on thursday, into the 50s and then the 40s over the weekend. dry in our immediate area. to the south, though, we are watching the rain and that will affect us later today, even as early as late morning. so, as you get the kids ready for the bus stop, plan on the chance for showers later today. 38 in the suburbs, 40 in the city. seven-day forecast. 40 today. we're looking at a chance for showers. by tuesday, rain is likely, 52 degrees. wednesday there is that warm-up,

60 degrees, rainy and windy. by christmas day, the wind stays in place. we could see winds gusting over 30 miles per hour, right near 51 degrees and then back into the 40s for the weekend. saturday colder, 38, and just 39 on sunday. today the st. joe's prep hockey team will hit the ice and will be dressed in style. they'll be wearing pink for the pink the rink night at the stadium in havertown in honor of breast cancer awareness. the prep plays cardinal o'hara and all the proceeds will go to the kelly rooney foundation. pink the rink happens tonight at the stadium on darby road in havertown, delaware county. there is a $10 open skate that starts at 6:30 tonight. admission is free if you buy a pink the rink t-shirt for 20 bucks. the varsity game between st. joe's prep and cardinal o'hara begins at 8:00 and the jv game immediately follows. more than a million. this morning, we have new information about staples' credit and debit card data breach. the experts at cnbc explain just how many people may have been

love at the wells fargo center yesterday. 5,000 families enjoyed carnival games and other holiday festivities. every child received a new winter coat, plus a personalized gift for christmas. well, it's a short trading week, but lots of excitement on wall street following last week's stock market surge. landon dowdy is here with that in this morning's "cnbc business news." landon, good morning. >> tracy, good morning. stocks look to build on last week's gains as futures point to a higher open. the dow and nasdaq rising more than 2% last week, thanks in part to the fed's decision to be patient about raising interest rates. look for data today on existing home sales and unemployment and consumer sentiment later this week. on friday, the dow closing up 26 points to 17,804, the nasdaq up nearly 17 to 4,765. staples is admitting more than 1.1 million credit and debit cards may have been exposed in a data breach in october. they say hackers installed a
